The Cirque d’Art Theatre, has received the Ohio Art Education Association’s Distinguished Business/Organization for Art Education Award for the Southeastern Region of Ohio. The award is presented annually to “a business or organization which has supported Art Education in some special way.” Joshua Morris, who has two daughters enrolled in the Cirque program, supported the nomination of the program stating that “Cirque d’Art is a performing arts program, mentorship program, and most importantly, a supporting, loving, and caring family for all who are part of the program.” His support along with that of other community members helped Cirque win this prestigious state award.
Cirque d’Art Theatre presents modern European-style circus arts made popular by companies such as Cirque d’Soleil. Students in the program receive instruction in ballet, dance, aerial dance, acrobatics, adagio and tumbling in 31 weekly class sessions. Sliding-scale tuitions allow everyone to participate, regardless of economic status. Some of the major objectives of the program are to provide performing arts instruction that promotes self-esteem, good health and physical fitness, as well as to provide supervised, structured wholesome activities for students and young adults during non-school hours.
Pegi Wilkes, director of the Cirque d’Art Theatre, is passionate about the work she does with this program and believes that it helps to further economic development of the Portsmouth area by employing 21 individuals, using local businesses for equipment needs and offering performances each year in local venues.
The Cirque d’Art Theatre was nominated for the Ohio Art Education Association’s Distinguished Business/Organization award in November 2012 and was chosen for the award in the spring of 2013. The Ohio Art Education Association, dedicated to serving Ohio’s visual art educators, was founded in 1954. Its mission is to advance and support quality art education through professional development, leadership, service, advocacy and education.
