Boneyfiddle Arts Center, 546 Second Street in Portsmouth, Ohio, will be hosting many events and activities during the month of October to provide insight into one of Mexico’s traditional events, Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. This cultural observance honors deceased loved ones by remembering them, offering them love, and celebrating their memory
The Center will provide a Memorial Photo Wall to honor deceased family and friends. Anyone in the community may submit a non-returnable photo, no larger than 5 x 7, with the name of the departed. It will be honored in this special area for the entire month.
A Taste of Mexico will be held Saturday, October 13 from 5-8 PM at the Center and feature a quesadilla bar along with other traditional Mexican foods, beverages, and desserts. There will also be door prizes and silent auction items. Advance tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Center or from board members. Tickets at the door will be $25.
On Saturday, October 20 classes will be held for decorating sugar skulls and/or skull sugar cookies from 10 AM to 2 PM and 4 PM to 6 PM. Fees for the sugar skull class range from $6 to $12 dependent on the size of the skull chosen. The skull sugar cookie class is $1 for 2 cookies.
BAC will also be hosting a carved or decorated pumpkin contest on Saturday, October 27. Pumpkins should be delivered to the Center between 11 AM and Noon that day. Prizes for first, second, and third place will be awarded at 1 PM.
